a stumble is not a fall

for haiti. a new green tree grows from the rubble of your suffering.
legba and loko are by your side. the world is open.

i loved this morning's quote so much

"Risk! Risk anything!
Care no more for the opinions of others, for those voices.
Do the hardest thing on Earth for you.
Act for yourself. Face the truth!"

You will remember that leaping stream
where sweet aromas rose and trembled,
and sometimes a bird, wearing water
and slowness, its winter feathers.

You will remember those gifts from the earth:
indelible scents, gold clay,
weeds in the thicket and crazy roots,
magical thorns like swords.

You'll remember the bouquet you picked,
shadows and silent water,
bouquet like a foam-covered stone.

That time was like never, and like always.
So we go there, where nothing is waiting;
we find everything waiting there.

no pick-a-nick basket

i love this story about a grizzly in alaska completely ravaging a bush plane. he took a big ol' dump too right by the plane, i'm guessing after all the hard work. was it hungry? was it just looking for some fun? was it getting revenge for the murder of a loved one a few hunts ago?
anyway, the pilot patched up the plane with duct tape and cellophane. classic!!! the romance of the great outdoors.

good morning

down river from my daily fishing spot. derek took me on the tram and we just hung there mid air, mid river watching the big fish swimming upstream after the rain. i tried like hell to catch one of those salmon but i swear i was possessed by chevy chase because i ended up doing the funniest dumb shit. i was seriously attacked by hungry brambles. i ended up in the water-twice! my drag adjustment knob broke so i was reelin' in 5 ft of line for like 20 minutes! i lost my lure to the 5th snag in a 10 minute period. oh and i spilled my coveted red stripe after dropping the joint in my shoe! it was only funny towards the end. needless to say i didn't catch shit but we ate well later that week-bbq'd steelhead with plum pepper jelly from the garden. hot damn!

note the heavy metal shop shirt-i used to go there with my brother toby. it's in salt lake city. he would pick me up and we would cruise the drag in his '69 camero blasting slayer or the gorilla biscuits even megadeth!!
we're meetin' up for this show. the coolest!

tara donovan

i just stumbled accross a retrospective of tara donovan's. holy shit! i could smell the tarpaper that looked like a slice of earth's curst and the "glow" of the stalagmites was very alluring-they were freakin' buttons though! it was breathtaking! reminded me of the epic sculptural take over that anne hamilton creates. she completely redefined the objects.
found this-the best interview with her, albeit an old one.
she's good stuff.

i have a love/hate relationship with these turkeys. american indians wouldn't even eat wild turkeys because they feared inheriting their stupidity. one of the girls got locked in the tiny trailor bathroom. she was so hot and so stressed out. i felt really bad and spent over 20 minutes yelling fuck and trying to get her ass out of there. i had shit all over my shirt, my shoes, and in my hair. they are kind of dumb but in an innocent way. all they really care about is eating. and they've been eating well. i throw over slimey, holed strawberries from the patch, all the leftover fish guts, apple cores, collard greens, and grubs. poor chickens don't have a chance half the time.
well, michelle drove her enduro over to butcher one of the girls(how hot is that?!) for thanksgiving. i'm glad i didn't start naming them because this is gonna be the best tasting bite of turkey ever! yeah, just to try.
thanksgiving is a great time to think about food. where does it come from, what is it doing for your health. it breaks my heart to know that billions of animals are crowded in cages and treated like shit or that planes are dropping clouds of chemicals over crops of growing plants. but what might be even worse is knowing how this kind of abuse effects our own bodies. you are what you eat. i'm an organic backyard sweet potato pie-yes! at least until i eat some cheetos.

good day to grow old

for my birthday in the woods i decided to venture west and explore the coast a little. i had heard trinidad was a cool little place and patricks point was not to be missed. i always wanted to go to redwoods national park so i packed up and off we drove down the windy mountain road to where people were. Ahhhhh!
i bought a latte somewhere in between and damn was it delicious! deprivation makes endulgance so much sweeter!!! slowed for a deer in the road and a super sexy '49 chevy truck and eventually made it to trinidad. the coast here reminded me a lot of oregon's. it was beautiful but tough. bella and i played ball on the beach and then went for a little hike. i searched for a smokehouse on the way out of town and wouldn't you know-it was closed.
back on the road towards big reds stopping at the outrageously priced and un-dog friendly patricks point just to make the ranger giggle. should've stopped at college cove but went on to a real nice part of the rednp for some explorin'.
it was amazing and wonderful with ghostly tree trunks and quiet for miles. i took lots of boring photos and looked for bugs. the day was already almost over. on the way out of prarie creek i stopped at a little store/cafe and god damn if they didn't have smoked salmon! the owner felt like family and she swooned at bella and we talked about her sons woodwork in the room next door and how i should move there. we shared my salmon and i eventually left. last stop-the movies.
there was a really great old theatre in town and i was just in time for zombieland! i got my popcorn, milk duds, and even cherry coke!!!! and climbed the stairs to the balcony. i sat up there all by myself, feet up, burping if i wanted to. i was so happy. i bought myself a new book and called it a day. a good birthday.
